"Friends of Wi-Ta-Wentin" is a hardworking, new non-profit corporation founded to secure the continued existence of beautiful Camp Wi-Ta-Wentin. The rustic, 75-acre campsite has been located on Burnett Bay of the Calcasieu River since 1950, and has been a community treasure to generations of young girls and boys. The 'bones' of the old campsite are good, and with some solid work will be there for generations of Southwest Louisianians yet to come.
“Friends” began from the desire of a mother – Margie Heard, to honor her 18 year-old son Cody Heard who died in April 2003. “My son loved the outdoors and loved children,” Heard says. “I had heard Camp Wi-Ta-Wentin needed money and help and I thought Cody would love that.” Some friends got together to participate in a workday at Camp. This organization is an outgrowth of that occasion.
